My Natural Doggy Toothpaste To Get Rid Of Bad Dog Breath
Pet owners like us treat our dogs like a member of the family. Sometimes they want to go for a walk every hour, sometimes they only like food that’s ‘human food’. With all their quirks, we love them all the more…even when their breath stinks. For our family dog, Riddick, I came up with an amazing recipe to keep the bad breath at bay and create something that he really enjoys.
Meet Riddick!
I have grown up with dogs my entire life. My parents got a collie because they’re known to be great with kids.
When I started growing my family, I avoided getting a dog along with the three kids. It was a better fit to ‘rent’ a dog (aka borrow my parents’ dog). This all changed one day when I took my kids to a dog farm and came home with a puppy. My husband always told me “what crazy lady takes a 6, 8 and 10-year-old to a dog farm, and thinks they won’t come home with a puppy?!”. Here are 5 top facts you should know about Riddick.
Fast forward to today, meet Riddick! He’s our family dog, a standard or rough collie. And you know, collies were the all american dog at that point, think Lassie –they really are so great with families and kids. As he grew older, we learnt about all of his ‘special powers’ like having breath so stinky it can vacate our living room in 10 seconds flat.
Why do dogs get bad breath?
For our dog breed and his long mouth, Riddick is prone to getting bad breath. If you’re not careful enough, over time their teeth can rot and will have to be pulled. So, to keep the bad breath at bay, I use this homemade toothpaste, its really easy to make from things you already have around the kitchen.
Make sure to NEVER use human toothpaste on your dogs! Most toothpastes contain the ingredient Xylitol, which is very toxic to dogs. There are great dog-friendly toothpastes on the market and ways to make your own.
